WIP Wednesday

When does a work in progress become a UFO I frequently ask myself as I stare at the growing pile of quilt tops on the spare bed (or granny's bed as it is affectionately known in our house).

For example, do you remember my Lark quilt top, which I made one afternoon back in.... January? No, I don't expect you do.  I know it's very simple but I really wanted to show off Amy Butler's fabrics, most of which are large scale.

While I was in England I picked up some batting and my mum bought me this Amy Butler fabric for the backing as part of my birthday present. So guess what I'll be doing tomorrow?  Yes - I'll be on all fours basting.

So my question for you this fine evening is: what do you think about the quilting?  I would like to do some straight line quilting and any suggestions would be very gratefully received.

So in honour of resuscitating this UFO and Lee's return from her summer break,  I'm linking up for the first time in a very long time with WIP Wednesday here. Head over and see what more productive people are up to.

  1. it's such a lovely top! I have no ideas for quilting it though - I am no help at all!

  2. If you want to do straight line quilting then I would stick to a quarter inch either side of the seams. You could always add an extra line to the inside of the line that passes through the print fabrics. The other side would look like plaid a bit.

  3. That's an interesting challenge - whether to quilt it as a whole, or whether and how to treat the squares separately. I'd probably be dull and straight line it up and down in white, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do and I know it's going to be lovely!

  4. Actually I do remember this quilt. Pretty. I just got Angela Walters Free Motion Quilting book. You could do her basic swirls in the squares to give them some texture and slightly wiggly lines in the sashing. I would keep to matching/blending thread to make the fabric the focal point. Just a thought. I know that whatever you do will look grand!

  5. It's a lovely quilt - I would do wonky wavy lines, because thats how I quilt everything ;-)

  6. It is pretty! I would do some lines, straight or wavy in the white sashing first and then a simple FMQ design in each of the blocks. Good luck deciding!

  7. oh geez I love that line. This is my first time at your blog so I did not get to see it back in Jan lol it is beautiful though! I am stopping by from the WIP blog hop. I have my WIPs up today if you want to stop by :)http://domesticdeficitdisorder.blogspot.com/2012/09/this-weeks-wips.html

  8. Hmm, maybe some dense straight lines in the white bits, and leave the patterned bits?

  9. Actually, I do remember this quilt top. I thought it looked familiar the moment I saw it! Baptist fans would look amazing. I really need to quilt a quilt with baptist fans since you are the second person I have suggested it to! I have the ruler to make it easy and everything:O

  10. I remember that top too! I think "yes!" to the straight line quilting and I would quilt it as a whole and just have fairly dense straight lines from top to bottom. I have seen that done and it is lovely!

  11. This looks very promising! I love that quilt top and I think the backing will be beautiful with it. I might go organic with the quilting lines since the pieced fabric is so ordered. Maybe some wavy vertical lines like this:

  12. That collection is one of my favorites! The prints are so beautiful so I don't blame you for wanting to highlight them. I could see straight diagonal lines.

  13. I don't remember it, but there again I can't remember my own name some days! Love the fabrics though. I've done two similar quilts - one with straight lines 1/4 inside and outside blocks. The other was diagonal lines through the corners. Both looked nice. I'm sure you'll get it just right!

  14. I think you have some fun quilting time ahead of you. I like Susan's idea but I also think that this quilt would look great quilted corner to corner in a cross hatch if you wanted something a bit different.

  15. I like the idea of some different FMQ in each of the squares, but to be honest I end up quilting a lot of things with straight lines just because I know that it will get finished faster that way!

  16. What about some simple straight lines in your blocks, but a more meandering pattern in the white sashing? Or pebbles in the sashing? I can't wait to see it finished!

  18. I can't offer quilting advice but I love the backing fabric and think it will look so good with your quilt top
(which I think is fab !) Happy basting! xxx

  19. I love the way you are bypassing the WIP/UFO question by making it a finish! I think this top is lovely and the simplicity of the piecing leaves the quilting choices wide open. I really like straight lines but something more elaborate would also show up really well :)

  20. I am the last person to ask about quilting because I am terrible at it. But this quilt will be lovely no matter how you quilt it. I do like Susan's idea
