Fresh Sewing Day

It feels like I am slowly getting back in to the swing of blogging, blog reading and commenting. I've almost finished my first year as an EFL teacher and lesson planning is not occupying so much time, which means more sewing!

Okay so I'm not saying I became super productive or anything but:
  • I finished my AMH Hand Drawn Garden plus quilt
  • I made, yes made the Amy Butler Window to the Soul quilt in less than 2 weeks! (Full reveal soon)
  • I made progress on my Tula Pink Modern City Sampler blocks
  • I made a couple of blocks and received the last of my Stitch Tease Modern Maple blocks
  • my mum offered to paint a pile of my quilts
  • and most importantly, we celebrated Zaki's 6th birthday
Looking at this mosaic, it was a colourful month.

Fresh Sewing Day

I'm become a bit of a slow blogger.  I'm busy creating and loving the slower pace of hand pieced projects which I hope to share with you soon.

So May's big finish was my Field Study triangles quilt, which now lives on our bed. My seventh finish of the year but who's counting?!

There were the usual bee blocks - some super pretty improv. blocks for Di in aqua teal and turquoise and some HST blocks in shades of grey with pops of colour for Christine.

May saw the beginning of some more hand stitching when I completed my first Camelot block and am really pleased with it. I'm half way through the second block, which is proving a lot more challenging! I also began sewing my aqua, orange and grey hexy flowers together.

I have had lots of lovely happy mail this week, which I shall show and tell soon. In the meantime, I'm off to make a project book for all this hand sewing!

Fresh Sewing Day - May Issue

1. Scrappy X Block for Celine, 2. Joining Up the Hexy Flowers, 3. Field Study Triangle Quilt Top, 4. Liberty Tana Lawn Brick Cushion, 5. Aurifil Block for April, 6. A Chicopee Churn Dash for Emily, 7. Scrappy Trip Around the World Blocks 1 - 16, 8. Chicopee & Low Volume Cushion, 9. Scrappy X Block for Celine, 10. Field Study Triangle Quilt Top, 11. My Stitch Tease Quilt Top, 12. Mama Said Sew Quilt Top

April may be my favourite month of makes ever!
  • I finally sliced and diced my 24 FQs of Field Study and made a triangle quilt.  I.LOVE.IT  Batting and binding are on their way from England and the voile backing from the States.  Let's hope there is a happy reunion here in N.Africa soon!
  • I've started joining up the aqua, orange and grey hexy flowers and I am loving both the process and how they look.  This is going to be a gorgeous quilt.
  • Jumping on the bandwagon is something I usually do as the bandwagon is careering round the corner and the trip around the world blocks proved too hard to resist.  I have made 16 blocks so far and I love them!
  • Stitch Tease quilt tops arrived around the globe and mine was an eclectic mix of bright curvy blocks - I love it! Now just to work out how to quilt it...
  • April saw my 6th quilt finish with me completing a baby quilt for Cindy so that she can use it as a sample for charm packs at a quilt fair in Galway (how fun does that sound?) in June.  I finished it a few days ago and shall show you tomorrow!
  • I took part in Le Challenge after making a Liberty tana lawn brick cushion. It wasn't love at first sight but it makes me happy when I see it.  It's a keeper!
  • Despite this being a bee lite month, I was lastminute.com with Celine's bee blocks in the Sew-Euro-Bee-An bee.  Celine asked for lovely X blocks (tutorial here) in bright scrappy novelty and text prints.  I put them off as I didn't have a lot of either but charm swap squares together with my own stash and scraps came to the rescue and all was well.
  • There's nothing better than helping someone out and I made a Churn Dash block for Emily after she posted about having been let down 6 times over in a bee.
So that's April over.  This month looks as busy as ever and Zaki turns 5 in a week so some celebrating too!

Fresh Sewing Day March Edition

So February wasn't quite so prolific as January but satisfying all the same...and it was shorter after all.

There was just the one finish - the Love it or Hate it baby quilt for Amira who arrived yesterday! She was slightly ahead of schedule and we're hoping to meet her tomorrow. Mother and baby are doing well.

I made good progress on James' Union flag quilt by adding a border and piecing a back, which I have started quilting so I'm hoping for an early March finish, which should bring my 2013 quilt finishes to a self -astonishing 5.

There was some progress with my granny quilt but I'm awaiting fresh supplies of (Kona) snow before I can take it any further.

I tried some new things - including paper piecing for the first time, making Lynne's Just Jack block. I also joined in Debbie's triplezipalong making a triple zippered pouch for me and I made a travelling teabag pouch (using Charlotte's excellent tute) as a gift and I can see me making more of these in the future.

And I could hold off no longer and started a new quilt assembling the top in half a day - my giant Cameo star. I have some backing and can rustle up some binding.  I'm just hoping the batting turns up in time for the fabric mule's (aka my lovely mum) visit on Monday.  Fingers crossed!

*the Megan's Star blocks are a bit of a cheat as I didn't make them, well not all of them - they are my bee blocks from the We Bee Modern Too bee, but I laid them out in February for the first time and needed an extra photo for my mosaic.

Fresh Sewing Day - January Edition

'January - sick and tired you've been hanging on me'

Forgive me for feeling ever so slightly smug but last month I turned 2 quilt tops and a pile of blocks in to three finished quilts. This is a personal record.  Likely never to be repeated.

I continued to work on my bee blocks and still have a couple of outstanding ones, which I shall finish over the next couple of days.

January was the month I celebrated my 2 year blog anniversary, or rather didn't.  Keep your eyes out for a belated giveway...coming soon!

And here's a mobile phone snapshot of our non-sewing January.

.
Tomorrow I shall link up with Lynne and her Fresh Sewing Day.  Head on over there for lots of inspiration of the sewing variety.

December Fresh Sewing Day

1. Katherine's Wheel Spring Carnival EPP, 2. Front of Salma's Tote, 3. Blocks for Hurricane Sandy Help!, 4. We Bee Modern Too Block - November, 5. Monochromatic Union Jack Quilt Top, 6. Front of Christmas Tote, 7. Strip for Danny in the Stitch Tease Bee, 8. Liberty Spring Carnival Blocks for Celine, 9. Bathroom Tile Block

November was the month that my year old Janome moaned and groaned and decided enough was enough...at least for the time being until it is repaired all being well later this month.

Last month, there was...

...a lot of EPP
the usual bee blocks
a quilting disaster with my Curious Nature Stained man quilt
a favourite make of the Union Jack quilt top (although unlikely to be made up in time for Christmas)
progress with my orange, aqua and grey hexies
little progress on my mum's quilt
participation in Katy and Laura's Travellin' Picstitch blog hop (still time to link up your entry here)
splurges on bundles during the Black Friday sales
and secret makes for...shhhhhhh

It's ridiculous to think this is the last Fresh Sewing Day link up for 2012! There is so much to do and so little time.  I'm admitting defeat for the rest of 2012 and only doing what I have to do until my machine is repaired.

Zaki is better but his fever was a symptom of a vomiting virus which reared its ugly head on Wednesday.  I'm hopelessly behind on my blog reading and emails so I'm sorry if I have been a little quiet! I'm disappointed with my progress this year.  I made and finished very little in reality and am already working on my sewing resolutions for January.   I am definitely planning to be in less bees and sew more for me and my nearest and dearest! What are you promising to be better at next year?

Fresh Sewing Day - The Scrappy Edition

Pinch punch, first day of the month!

1. Not available, 2. Megan's Star Block, 3. Mouthy Stitches Tote Front, 4. Scrappy X and Plus Quilt Top for the Care Circle of do.Good Stitches, 5. Mouthy Stitches Tote Back, 6. Looking back at October, it was definitely the month of scrappy but I like scrappy...it makes me happy!

A big highlight was the Mouthy Stitches swap, which is all but done.  My tote has arrived safe and sound with my partner but I'll tell you who tomorrow. I'm hoping the tote heading my way might arrive any day!  It was also the month of English paper piecing with Lynne's lozenges and my orange, aqua and grey hexies, which I continue to work at.  I was queen bee in We Bee Modern Too and I chose Megan's Star. I'm excited by the blocks popping up in the flickr group for me.  I also started my mum's Kaffe Fasset quilt and received the backing and binding fabric - it's going to look quite dramatic I think.

November looks to be super busy already so wish me luck!

September Makes

It's October!!  This makes me very very happy indeed as it means temperatures are almost guaranteed to cool.

With Zaki back at pre-school, productivity definitely increased this month and my favourite part was finishing my Lark quilt.  There was also the usual bee blocks, some EPP hexies and bunting!

October should bring a couple of new quilt tops (including my mum's), a tote bag for Mouthy Stitches 2 and more bee blocks including some for me!

Fresh Sewing Day - April

 1. Embroidery Detail, 2. Curious Nature Pouch (Front), 3. Back of Name Tag for Partner , 4. Scrappy x and plus blocks, 5. April Block We Bee Modern too, 6. Embroidery, 7. Parisville Pouch, 8. Stained Quilt Top, 9. Group Shot of Blocks for Hive 4, 4x5 Modern Quilt Bee, 10. Scrappy Granny Block, 11. Curious Nature Pouch (Back), 12. Embroidery, 13. Scrappy Grannies14. Not available15. Not available16. Not available

How is it May...I mean, how is it May?? It`s still unseasonably cool here.  Long may it continue but how can it be?

April was the month when I tried something new. I attempted embroidery and have to say that I really quite like it..I`m surprised!  It`s so restful and slow and takes me back to this time last year when I didn`t even have a sewing machine so everything was hand-stitched - blocks, seams, quilting and binding!

It was also the month when I fell behind in the Stitch Tease Bee.  I don`t like getting behind especially when it`s on a project with good bloggy friends.  You see I haven`t been able to even start my blocks for Di - the swap mama of Stitch Tease.  I ordered some white solid as all I had was a small amount of snow and it still hasn`t arrived. I`ve made my excuses and will get started as soon as the solid arrives.  Do I sound like a broken record? So this month I still have Di`s blocks to make as well as Susan`s. Help!

April was my month as Queen Bee in the Care Circle of do.Good Stitches and I asked my lovely ladies to make me as many x and plus blocks for a quilt of Lynne`s Siblings Together.  They lived up to expectations and then some.  We are going to have ourselves a great quilt or quilts for someone at camp this summer.  There was also bee blocks for the 4x5 Modern Quilt Bee and We Bee Modern Too.

I also had to make a name tag for my secret partner in the FQ Retreat Name Tag Swap.  I have a fabulous partner. Ideas came very easily.  The hard part was executing those ideas.  I can`t show you the front as to do so would give the game away.  You`ll just have to sit tight until she has received it.  I hope she likes it!

May is already shaping up to be super busy  - my head is already starting to spin. With the usual bee obligations, playing catch-up in the Stitch Tease Bee, quilts for Siblings Together and preparations for the FQ Retreat - help!

It`s May 1 and it`s a public holiday here so we are off out for a spin in the new (used) car!

Fresh Sewing Day - April Fool`s Day Edition

1. My Beautiful Mini Package, 2. Block 1 for my Stitch Tease quilt, 3. A4 Notebook Cover, 4. Not available, 5. Kaffe Fasset Selvedge Pouch Zipper Ends, 6. Block 2 for my Stitch Tease quilt, 7. March Block for Heather, 8. FTLOS2 Mini and front of Matching Pouch, 9. Block for Amber, 10. My Swap Package, 11. Block for Leigh, 12. Scrappy Grannies

Well I guess I shouldn`t be too disappointed as there were the usual block makes for bees including the big HST block for the Care Circle of do.Good Stitches and my starter blocks for the Stitch Tease bee, a notebook cover for Sunni`s Farmer`s Wife in Your Life series, some scrappy grannies, a couple of pouches and the interviews for the My Modern Muse series.

I cheated a tad by including the two beautiful swap makes I received from Ali and Jeanette. As Hadley said last week as we were astride our mules trekking through the Ourika Valley, for those people who just look at the photos, they`ll think I made them!

How did your month go?

March Fresh Sewing Day

 1. Gee`s Bend Inspired Mini Quilt, 2. Pouch back, 3. We Bee Modern Too - February Block, 4. For the Love of Solids Mini Back, 5. do.Good Stitches (Care Circle) February Blocks, 6. Pouch Front, 7. perle hand stitching detail, 8. For the Love of Solids Mini Front, 9. do.Good Stitches (Care Circle) February Blocks

Oh my, February was one frenetic month and was fairly selfless as nearly everything I made was for someone else - either one of the two swap makes (Mouthy Stitches and For the Love of Solids) or bee blocks (We Bee Modern Too and do.Good Stitches). There was definitely a green and yellow thing going on too!

The only thing I made for myself was the Gee`s Bend inspired mini, which I love.  I made it as part of Jennifer`s super fun Modern Mini Challenge, the linky for which opens on Monday March 5.  This is my entry. It has really inspired me to use solids more and to experiment with improv, piecing.  The mini will hang in our kitchen and remind me that trying something new is fun!

I finally got my pouch finished for the Mouthy Stitches swap after the linen I needed finally arrived.  It`s winging its way to my partner and I hope she likes it.

I`m really hoping that March will be more laid back. There were times last month when it was all beginning to feel like work (because vital supplies took an age to arrive which is all stress inducing believe me) and for me that`s not what it`s all about.  So time for a breather.

I confess to having had to pad out my mosaic this month as I was only in the company of my beloved stash for a couple of weeks.

While I was in England, I finished Baby George`s 1001 Peeps` quilt and he posseted over it immediately. I`ll take that as a good sign.

When reunited with said stash, I finished my blockade bee blocks for the 4x5 Modern Quilt Bee, made a couple of starflower blocks for Karen in the do.Good Stitches bee, whipped up a super simple quilt top form Amy Butler`s Lark in the Glamor colourway, made a practice pouch for the Mouthy Stitches swap from its selvedges and another in Echo.

This month looks super busy already what with more bee blocks, the Mouthy Stitches pouch swap, a make for the For the Love of Solids swap and Jennifer`s Modern Mini Challenge,..oh and add in to the mix Zaki being on his school holidays for the next couple of weeks - EEEK!

All Ready to be Packed Up and Sent Off, 17. Lucky Pieces Block, 18. Detail, 19. Proposed Layout for DP QAL, 20. Duo QAL Quilt Front

I've been a bit absent from the blogging scene the last few days as I've got technical problems with the laptop and it's too darn chilly at the moment to sit at the big computer unless swamped in a blanket.  I've also been busy finishing up the Union Jack quilt for Elicia, my friend Deborah's daughter.  There it is in the mosaic at No.12. I'll show you some full frontal photos of the quilt once I've hand delivered it this weekend!  In Paris!  Brrrrrr!

This is my third month sewing almost daily and I'm totally loving it.  I feel like I'm improving month by month and becoming quicker and more productive.

Here are this month's stats:

Most fun make -  Christmas Tablerunner (No.4) for Susan's  Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap
Most Satisfying Finish - finally the Union Jack quilt (No.12), which has taken way too long and been over thought
Favourite New Block - the Drunkard's Path! (No.11) I love this block - it's so versatile and fun to make
Favourite Fabric Purchased - Lark in Glamor by Amy Butler (can²t wait to make some Swoon blocks using it)
Prettiest Block - the Blockade block (No.1)
Fun Quick Makes - the fabric envelope (No.3) and the tree ornament (No.5)
New Skills - piecing HSTs and piecing curved DP blocks and stipple quilting my first quilt - the Red City Quilt (No.12)(so called because I used Moroccan Mirage in the Marrakech colourway by Kristian A. Howell)
Quilts finished - Red City Quilt and Union Jack quilt
Quilts started- Drunkard's Path and Plus (No.7) baby quilts

I received a wonderful surprise in the post today but that will keep until tomorrow.

Linking up with Lynne for Fresh Sewing Day.  Why don't you nip over there and see what other sewists have been up to last month.  I'll be away for a couple of days but will tell you all about it next week!  Off to pack warm clothes...if I can find any...

Fresh Sewing Day

Like September, much of October was spent sewing although looking at this mosaic I don`t feel like I accomplished as much as I wanted but isn`t that always the case?

Last month, I was pleased to get shot of a couple of UFOs in the shape of the Union Jack cushion, which I started back in February (I think) and absolutely love.  I also finished the Marrakech Rose quilt.

Other highlights included being busy with the Scrappy Swap 2011 organized by Kat and which is now winding up.  After the pink puffy pouch was rejected (by me for quality standardss - not my lovely partner who said she loved it), I sent her the Terrain fabric basket, some scraps and a couple of local items.  They have a long way to travel and haven`t arrived yet.  I hope she likes them.

I was also working on the fabulously fun Modern Tablerunner Swap being organized by Susan.  Design done.  Fabrics chosen.  Just waiting on additional fabric ordered online for backing and binding.  I`m lagging behind on this one but it will get done.  Never fear.

I made a quilt top from Moroccan Mirage for the Duo QAL and it is basted and ready for quilting!  On time on this one (after a massive catch up!)

What else?  A fall tote bag made from fabric and pattern brought over by my lovely mum during her recent lurgy ridden visit, my second block and a remake of the first block for the Bloggers` BOM and now I have work to do for the 4x5 Modern Quilt Bee.  There`s my colour inspiration mosaic bottom left.  My colours are purple (think deep amethyst and plum), orange and grey.  No pink. When I saw the talent in this bee, there was an audible gulp.  Have I got myself in too deep this time?

Linking up with Lynne over at Lily`s Quilts.  Thanks as ever to Lynne for hosting this linky party.  Hop over there and see the amazing talent out there.  Lynne also hosts a Small Blog Meet Up every first day of the month so go and show your support to the smaller blogs and get following a few.

A Confession, A Lover`s Tiff & A Full Blown Affair!

Pinch punch - it`s October and the September Sewathon has drawn to a close.

It doesn`t look like much, but this month I started and completed -

6 community blocks
3 mug rugs and 2 fabric baskets for Cindy`s Goodie Swap 2011
the first block for The Blogger`s BOM QAL

I also started a baby quilt using Kumari Garden

and ordered way too much fabric...

I held a giveaway sponsored by The Intrepid Thread and Hadley was the lucky winner

I participated in The Goodie Swap 2011 and joined 2 new swap
Susan`s The Modern Christmas Tablerunner Swap and Kat`s Scrappy Swap 2011

and I am super proud that I participated in and finished my Across the Seas lap quilt

Across the Seas lap quilt
and joined 3 new quiltalongs (QALs)

I said goodbye to an old friend and said hello to a new one...

I have a confession to get off my chest. Towards the end of August, I signed up for the Across the Seas Quiltalong with Jennifer and Sarah.  I had been following Jennifer for a little while when in August she made her `big announcement`.  I was thrilled to see it was a quiltalong (QAL) but I didn`t really get the Greek cross on which her and Sarah`s design was based. I wasn`t sure whether I should join.  Then I read some of the comments on the announcement post and saw that a good bloggy pal had already put her hand up.  I knew that I had to trust Jennifer on this one, I joined too and  that was the beginning of a big love affair.

I love this block and the scrappy border - they have a vintage feel to me
I made my blocks for the quilt using my huge FQ of Parisville after Lynne at Lily`s Quilts gave a tip off that a stack of all the Parisville colourways was on sale at the Fat Quarter Shop for something ridiculous like thirty odd dollars.  I love this fabric so so much - it`s eclectic and a little bit quirky but has deep rich colours and gorgeous design detail.

As I started making my blocks, I fell deeper and deeper in love with Jennifer and Sarah`s design and my fabric.  This was going to be a great QAL - everything was coming together beautifully until it came to the  time for my creative input.  The quilting.  We had a lover`s tiff. I acted badly and like all romantic fall-outs, I blamed my own inadequacies on the other person quilt. Everyone said to calm down (get over myself - no, no they are too sweet to say that) and put the binding on, wash it and admire its lovely crinklyness.  All would be well.

The binding is Opal from Heirloom by Joel Dewberry
Well of course they were right.  It`s finished and I`ve broken a personal record.  It has previously taken me anything from between 4 months and a year and a half to complete my previous two quilts but this one took just 6 weeks.

I love the bordered blocks designed by Sarah for the back
I am totally in love with it and it is my all time favourite quilt so far.  Looking at comments made by others who have completed their quilts, I am not alone in feeling this. The icing on the cake would have been to stipple quilt it but that wasn`t to be.  No biggie.  A huge shout out to the fabulous Jennifer and Sarah who gave such amazing support and such beautifully clear directions, directed us to great tutorials, and to the QALongers who made the experience such fun. Here`s to the next one and the sooner the better.

I think quilts look almost better folded up.
To celebrate this finish, I`m delighted to be linking up for the first time in 6 months with Fresh Sewing Day over at Lily`s Quilts, and thanks again to Lynne for the great Parisville shout out.

Hand Quilting Again??

This quilt is rapidly heading for the Guiness Book of Records as the quilt completed in the longest time.  I started it in October 2009 and now it`s March 2011 and Z is significantly longer yet the quilt is the same size. It seems I never learn.  I`m handquilting Z`s quilt because I want to fill it with love so that when Z is snuggling in it he can feel his mother`s love wherever he is.
At least I got to do some quilting this week.  I did the beastly basting a couple of days ago and started the hand quilting yesterday using masking tape as a guide for my stitching - a tip I picked up from Jane Brocket`s The Gentle Art of Quilting - it`s re-usable and doesn`t leave any marks. Super easy! I think I may unpick the stitching so far as I`m unsure of stitching at right angles to the pieces.  I think it might look better stitched following the length of the piece instead.
The front is an Arcadia Moda layer cake and the backing is Cloud 9`s `Clearing`, which I thought had a retro `50s feel about it, which complemented the front.
There is a link to this post on Lilys Quilts Fresh Sewing Day  - a new project by Lynne to celebrate her blogaversary.  Each 1st day of the month, Lynne is having a fresh sewing day when she is encouraging everyone to share with others their favourite or latest project and to create on her blog a link showing it.  Lynne explains it much better so hop over to her blog and share something you are doing at the moment...oh, and visit each others blogs and share the love.
